Silent Continuities — Program

bretagne

1. Introduction

The Mont-Saint-Michel Summer Artist Residency is a two to eight-week immersive experience dedicated to painting, drawing, writing, music creation and presence.

Rooted in the theme Silent Continuities, the program offers artists a rare combination of time, space, and freedom — without imposed subject matter, without stylistic constraints.

This residency does not seek to direct content. It creates conditions.

2. Curatorial & Artistic Direction — Silent Continuities

Silence here is not absence. It is rhythm, repetition, horizon, breath.

Artists are invited to explore continuity through:

  • landscape and seascape
  • abstraction or figuration
  • inner or outer observation
  • gesture, line, colour, or light

The Mont-Saint-Michel region — tides, skies, winds, and oceans — becomes both subject and mirror.

Artists may paint what they see, what they feel, or what quietly emerges. There is no imposed theme beyond silence and continuity.

5. A Residency of Time, Place, and Living

This residency is conceived as a resourceful, refreshing, and time-oriented experience, where creation and daily life unfold together as an art of living.

Rather than focusing on production targets or outcomes, the Mont-Saint-Michel Short-Term Residency invites artists to slow down, breathe, observe, and reconnect — allowing work to arise naturally, if and when it wishes to.

Here, art is not separated from living. Walking, looking, eating, resting, and sharing are part of the process.

6. Shared Experiences & Cultural Exploration

Throughout the residency, optional collective moments and light cultural activities will be proposed, including:

  • cultural visits in the region, including Mont-Saint-Michel, Saint-Malo, Dinan, and surrounding towns
  • walking and hiking along the emerald coast
  • short coastal or boat outings (weather permitting)
  • visits to local food markets and regional culinary experiences
  • participation in local music, dance, and summer festivals

These moments are offered as invitations — never obligations — and are designed to nurture presence, curiosity, and quiet joy.

7. Artistic Practice & Exhibition

Artists are free to:

  • paint, draw, or not produce at all
  • work indoors or outdoors
  • follow intuition rather than deadlines

There are no required deliverables during the residency.

8. Art Materials & Logistics

Art materials may be sourced locally, with arrangements assisted by Silver Linings Arts when needed.

Costs related to art materials, post-residency shipment, or artwork storage are to be borne by the artist.

Silver Linings Arts will assist with coordination and local logistics when appropriate.
