After several shows created with European teams, Christiane Jatahy returns to her native land, Brazil. Adapted from the novel Torto Arado (The Twisted Plow) by Itamar Vieira Junior, published in 2019, Depois do silêncio takes us to rural communities in the state of Bahia, in the Northeast. Accompanied by a percussionist, three young women, played by Afro-Brazilian and indigenous actresses, go back in history to reveal the survival of slavery in contemporary society and structural racism.
In an intimate narrative imbued with magical realism, they tell the story of life in the countryside and the struggle for land rights, freedom and identity. On stage, three screens allow members of the communities of Remanso and Iúna to enter into dialogue with the characters, via images recorded during fieldwork conducted in the region where the novel takes place.
